About us
Left on the Shelf is run by myself, Dave Cope, and was set up in 1992 when I bought the second hand stock from Central Books, at the time when the shop in Grays Inn Road was closed. I have spent practically all my working life in the radical book trade – from 1975 I managed Progressive Books in Liverpool, before moving to Central Books in London in 1987. Left on the Shelf was a part-time business till I moved to Kendal in Cumbria in 2004.
My storeroom is open by arrangement – I do not have a shop.
Kendal is very accessible by public transport and is also a lovely town to visit, at the edge of the scenic Lake District.
I am always interested in buying material in my areas of interest - best prices paid.
Send me your ‘Wants’ lists – I always have thousands of titles that are not yet listed.
This website also includes some of my research into the history of Radical Bookselling and also the Paris Commune of 1871.
My web-site will be up-dated every two months.
Second Hand Catalogue No. 50
I produce printed catalogues every two months with new titles (they then go on-line soon afterwards) – just let me know if you want to receive a copy. Given the cost of printing and posting these, if customers don’t buy from a catalogue after a year they are, in true Stalinist fashion, purged from the mailing list!
Or, I can send you email notification when the catalogue is on-line. If you are interested in receiving a copy leave your details here
