Radical Print Shops

This site, specialising in late 20th century print shops, nicely complements my research on the radical book trade.

Robert Tressell Society

News from Nowhere
Liverpool’s long-standing radical bookshop – they will order any new book for you.

London’s famous socialist bookshop (new and second-hand books).
Sedbergh Book Town (10 miles from Kendal)
It won’t match Hay on Wye for quantities of books, but it’s a lovely place.

Central Books
Set up in 1939, still Britain’s largest distributor of radical books and magazines (plus many mainstream). Their site has links to publishers and magazines.

Lawrence and Wishart
CP publishing house set up in 1936, still has a large backlist of socialist/political books.

Marx Memorial Library
Set up in the 1930s, this unique library has acquired a world-wide reputation for its extensive collections.

Working Class Movement Library
Huge collection of Labour movement material based in Salford.

British Library (on-line catalogue)

PBFA (Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association)
The world’s largest trade organisation for second-hand booksellers.

Paris Commune 1871

The McCormick Library
Their Special Collections at Northwestern University has a fabulous collection of images from the Commune.

Sussex University Library
Catalogue to their huge collection on the Commune.

Les Amis de la Commune
Good starting point for anyone interested in the Paris Commune; set up by exiled Communards on their return in 1882, this is the oldest organisation of the French labour movement. Has English version but not a good translation.

Labour History

TUC History site
Has material on “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists”, the General Strike etc.

Society for the Study of Labour History
Publishes the excellent “Labour History Review”.
